Understanding Pick Data

WagerWatchdog processes thousands of picks every day. Here's how to read and interpret the pick data you see throughout the platform.

Anatomy of a Pick

Every pick tracked by WagerWatchdog has these components:

The Subject

This is who or what the pick is about. It can be:

  • A player (e.g., "LeBron James") β€” predicting an individual player's performance.
  • A team (e.g., "Kansas City Chiefs") β€” predicting a team-level outcome.

The Category

This is what stat the pick is targeting. Common categories include:

SportCommon Categories
NFL / College FootballPassing yards, rushing yards, receptions, touchdowns, interceptions
NBA / College BasketballPoints, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, three-pointers
MLB / College BaseballHits, runs, home runs, strikeouts, earned runs
NHLGoals, assists, saves, shots on goal

Over/Under

Every pick has a direction:

  • Over (O) β€” The handicapper predicts the stat will be higher than the target value.
  • Under (U) β€” The handicapper predicts the stat will be lower than the target value.

The Value

This is the target number (the "line"). For example, "LeBron James Over 25.5 Points" means the handicapper is predicting LeBron will score 26 or more points.

Pick Outcomes

Once the game is complete and the stat is finalized, each pick is scored:

  • Correct (Win) β€” The actual stat was in the direction predicted. For example, LeBron scored 30 points and the pick was Over 25.5.
  • Incorrect (Loss) β€” The actual stat was opposite to the prediction. For example, LeBron scored 22 points and the pick was Over 25.5.
  • Push β€” The actual stat exactly matched the target value. Pushes are rare with half-point values (like 25.5) but common with whole numbers.

Parlays

Some picks are grouped into parlaysβ€”multi-pick bets where all selections must be correct. On the platform, parlay picks are visually grouped together and scored both individually and as a combined bet.

How We Collect and Score Picks

WagerWatchdog automatically:

  1. Monitors Discord servers and Twitter accounts in real time.
  2. Detects when someone posts a betting pick using pattern recognition.
  3. Identifies the player, team, stat category, direction, and value.
  4. Matches the pick to the actual game on the schedule.
  5. Scores the pick once the game is complete and stats are final.

This entire process is automated, ensuring objective and consistent scoring across all handicappers.
